Cadets at the U. S. Coast Guard academy are designated by class where a "4th Class" cadet, also known as a "Swab", is the equivalent of a Freshman, "3rd Class" and "2nd Class cadets are equivalent of Sophomores and Juniors. The "1st Class cadets, also known as "Firsties", are the equivalent of seniors. This year those graduating in '06 are "Swabs", those graduating in '03 are "Firsties".

The Corp of Cadets are responsible for running many basic functions of the school. Each of the eight companies (Alfa through Hotel) are assigned a general category of tasks to perform throughout the year. The "Swabs" are assigned to their new company after completion of their "Swab Summer" activities. They remain in that company for their first year. At the beginning of the "3rd Class" year the cadets are reassigned to a new company where they remain until graduation. The company designation and its basic area of responsibility is listed alongside each cadet's photo.
