President’s Message
Greetings Coastie Parents!
Spring has finally "sprung" bringing to mind thoughts of warmer
weather and all the things we plan to do now that it's enjoyable to be
outside. We also begin to look forward to our cadets' summer leave, and
the whirlwind of activity that will bring! For those of us that are '04
parents, it brings to mind another more immediate whirlwind of activity:
Graduation Week!
It's hard to believe that just four short years ago we were dealing with
DODMERB, hoping for that full appointment, getting phone calls from some
"Parents' Association" offering assistance/guidance, or just plain
wondering what our kids are getting themselves into... Now here we are,
anticipating five days of activity culminating in the graduation of our
cadets, and the challenges and opportunities that await them. Pretty
exciting times for our kids, and us too.
This is an exciting time for our '05, '06, and '07 parents also. Your
cadets are moving up the ranks. Fourth class cadets are no longer at the
bottom of the heap, and all are enjoying new challenges and responsibilities,
as well as new freedoms. In a way, it is a changing of the guard (some
pun intended).
We have a changing of the guard in our ranks too. For those of you who
missed the last meeting, we elected new officers for '04-'05. Deb and I
would like to welcome our new Co-Presidents, Jim and Judy Judycki, our new
Vice-President, Peggy Martin, and our new secretary, Martha Rodziewicz.
Pat Grant has graciously agreed to stay on as treasurer. Please congratulate
them on their new duties!
Deb and I can't thank enough the new officer-elects for stepping forward to
take up the challenge, and hope that you find it as rewarding as we have.
All but Pat are '07 parents and are still a little new to this, but we
know that you all will do well. The most important thing is leadership,
as the knowledge will come from
the group. As (now) past presidents, I feel it is our duty to act as
your consultants and sounding board (if needed!) for anything that may arise.
It has been our pleasure to serve this group, and to give a little something
back in return for the much wanted (and needed!) help and guidance we received
as Swab parents. Thanks again for your involvement, help, and input.
Semper Parentus!

1/C Keidi Niemann (’04): Keidi's first billet assignment is to United States Coast
Guard cutter Healy out of Seattle, Washington. The Healy is the largest
of the Coast Guard's icebreakers and spends most of its time from Seattle
north up into the Bering Sea and the North Polar regions. There is also the
possibility that the Healy will be sent to the Antarctic next winter; a trip
Keidi certainly hopes happens! In addition to its Coast Guard duties, the
Healy is a research support ship taking teams of scientist into these regions.
Her plans are to meet up with the Healy early this summer in Japan. With
her degree in Marine and Environmental Sciences, she is very
excited about this assignment and, like all first class cadets, anxious for
graduation!
1/C Christiane Grant ('04):
Christiane is the XO of Echo Company, and they are working on selecting
their new officers. She was assigned to be an engineer stationed on the
Alert out of Astoria, Oregon. Her state engineering exam is April 17 in
Hartford. She is looking forward to graduation and new places.
1/C Greg Lynch (’04): He will be stationed in Boston on a 270 foot cutter named the Spencer. He is looking forward to his first assignment and has already found an apartment three blocks from the Coast Guard Station. He is glad to have that off his mind. He is hoping that his mother and sister will help him furnish the apartment right after graduation.
1/C
Trevor Blount ('04): Trevor will be assigned to the USCGC Dauntless our of
Galveston. He will be a deck officer among other duties. He intends to visit
soon to find lodging and get settled in. This ship was his first choice.
1/C Kent Stein (’04):
Kent is anxiously awaiting graduation & “getting on
with life” aboard the USCGC Hollyhock out of Port Huron, Michigan as Deck
Watch Officer. Nitecaps, yearbook
photography, playing for Mass . . . things he’s enjoying, but realizing they
will be ending soon (no hint that he will miss classes & studying)!
4/C
Kristina Stefaniuk (’07):
Kristina has been assigned for
Cutter duty aboard the Midgett out of Seattle around May 8th. Apparently, the
Midgett will be traveling North to Alaska with a stop in the Aleutian Islands.
She is very excited and looking forward to the trip. After her tour with the West Coast she then flies to the East
Coast to catch the Eagle in warmer waters.
NOTE: If you have news about
your son or daughter and missed the deadline for submission of news, please
send it via email to the webmaster.
It will be inserted here.

Greetings Fellow Coastie Parents!
We hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Holiday Season, and best wishes for
2004! We also hope you all had an enjoyable time with your Cadets while
they were home on leave.
We first want to say it was nice to see you all at Parents' Weekend, and hope
you enjoyed your time with your Cadets in their "environment" as
much as we did. Also, we want to thank those of you who volunteered to
man the GLPA table as well as those who stopped by to chat and sign in.
We would have preferred to spend more time at the table, but we were attending
the National Parents'
Association Meeting. Our donation of $2,500 was very well received, and
we received many comments on how much our chapter donates, especially
considering our size.
For our chapter, this is an
extremely important meeting, as it is this time of year that we nominate and
vote on officers for the coming fiscal year.
The following positions will be open: President, Vice President,
Treasurer (Pat Grant graciously agreed to fill in for a year), and Secretary,
as well as a host of appointed positions. As you can see, this is a
pivotal time for our chapter, and its very existence depends upon the filling
of these offices. Deb and I have had a great time filling our duties of
Co-Vice Presidents ('02-'03), and then as Co-Presidents ('03-'04), but as our
son Brad is a Firstie this year, it is time for us to step aside for a
replacement. As I mentioned above, it is very important that all of
these offices be filled, as the very existence of our chapter depends upon it.
What qualifications, you may ask, are necessary for any of these positions?
None!! All you need is a willingness to spend a few extra hours a
year beyond coming to the meetings. You don't have to be from a
particular class to hold an office. A Fourth Class parent would be just
as welcome as a Second Class parent. Don't worry about whether or not
you have previous "experience" with any of these openings. We
know we speak for all of the current office holders in saying that all of us
will help with any
questions/concerns from our new officers. Deb and I especially will give
our time to bring our new President(s) and Vice President(s) up to speed on
schedules, events, and other required duties.
So, now that we've given you all our pitch to fill the open officer positions,
we hope you will put some serious thought into nominating
yourself (or someone else, with their agreement!). You may contact us by
e-mail or phone to express your interest.

1/C Keidi Niemann (’04): Keidi is in her last semester at the Academy and looking
forward to Billet Night. Her schedule again permits her to volunteer one
afternoon a week at the Mystic Aquarium--an enjoyable break in the academic
routine! Track season has begun and she is excited to be one of the team
captains for this year. We are all looking forward to graduation!
1/C Christiane Grant ('04):
Chris is the XO of Echo Company and is #56 in her class. She is
studying her wish list for her first civil engineering duty station.
This semester she is working on her senior project involving waste management
on the new Great Lakes buoy tenders and will be making a field observation of
their construction at Marinette Marine, in Marinette, WI. She is planning a
trip to
Alameda, CA, at spring break. She says that now she
"can't imagine going to any other school." Chris participated in an emergency wastewater treatment
meeting in Port Huron, Michigan, where Coast Guard Cutter Hollyhock is
stationed. The Hollyhock is using a certain type of water treatment
system that Chris's senior design project group has been researching. On
February 2, the Hollyhock flew Chris's group out to Michigan to attend the
meetings, talk with the engineers on Hollyhock and look at the system.
The group slept on board the Hollyhock and will return on February 4.
1/C Kent Stein (’04): Kent is anxiously awaiting Billet Night – hoping to leave for Alaska in June. Being CO of Nitecaps is keeping him busy along with yearbook photography, classes, and trying to avoid “senioritis”. All are looking forward to that wonderful day in May when long hours, long talks, and hard work on everyone’s part come to fruition!
Trevor
Blount ('04) is also looking forward billet night and things dealing with
his last semester and graduation. When he receives his billet information he
hopes to travel to his new duty station over spring break to look over the
area and get ideas about lodging. Its difficult to believe that this year has
come so quickly!
4/C Dan Judycki (’07):
Dan is back in the swing of things. He is doing well and compete
ting on the varsity wrestling team. He has received his silver star
& we are extremely proud of his accomplishment. He is now striving
for the gold star, hopefully he will be able to earn this third star.
3/C Ian Starr (’06):
Ian recently spent an extended weekend in Montreal for the Model U.N.
Conference. He enjoyed the time greatly and participated in the UNESCO
committee discussing bio-ethics and freshwater resources. He enjoyed the
Montreal nightlife, too! Ian is immersed in his Government
major studies and is working out with other cadets in the hope of
competing in Sandhurst this year.
4/C Anna McNeil (’07): The only 'news' we have is that she qualified (received ribbon) for the M-16 rifle and is enjoying the pistol team. We're excitedly waiting to find out where her first summer billet will be.
ALUMNI
NEWS
Ensign Jon Cox (‘03):
Jon is enjoying his time as EOIT on the USCGC Bear out of Portsmouth
VA. He's learned a lot down in the engine room, not only about engines,
but also in how to motivate and supervise people (an often very
challenging job!). The family went down to VA for Thanksgiving and got a
2-hour tour of his boat, including an hour-long portion in the engine room
itself. We missed seeing him at Christmas very much, as Jon has been out
in the Caribbean since early December. The cruise had been
uneventful until just last week, when the Bear was involved in the bust of two
cocaine-laden boats in as many days, and recovered over 5600 pounds of the
drug. Morale is pretty high right now, despite the addition of 2 weeks
to the length of their tour. In addition to learning his duties aboard
ship, Jon has been through Damage Control school and is the boat's DCA
officer. In his "free" time, he is busy planning his June
wedding to classmate Allison Klenk.
LTJG Andy Goshorn (’01): Andy is now assigned as an Engineering Officer at Coast Guard
HQ's. in Washington DC. He travels quite a bit to the various Coast Guard
facilities. He is currently in the process of being appointed to the White
House Social Detail.

Hello all,
The Memorial Day Holiday is upon us, which marks the “unofficial”
beginning of summer. Finally!
This also means that those who have First Class Cadets have seen their
sons and daughters graduate, receive their commissions, and become officers of
the United States Coast Guard. Congratulations!!
Those on the other end of the spectrum are celebrating that their
sons/daughters are now officially Third Class Cadets and are looking forward
to the additional privileges to be gained.
Congrats to you also!
We are all looking forward to having our Cadets home for a
short few weeks (if we’re lucky!) and the whirlwind of activity they’ll
bring with them before heading out to their various adventures or back to the
Academy, as the case may be.
In our more immediate future, we have the Great Lakes
Parent’s Association Orientation picnic coming up on Saturday, June 7 at the
Michigan City Coast Guard Station.
This
is a great opportunity for incoming cadets and their parents to get a good
idea of what to expect as they begin their CGA adventure! It’s also an opportunity for us “veteran” parents to
pass along our knowledge and give support to Swab parents during what for many
can be a difficult transition. After
all, this is a big part of what we as an organization are all about.
This year we have approximately seven Swabs and their
families planning to attend. We
are looking forward to meeting new members and seeing familiar faces as well.
We hope everyone can attend.
See
you there!

Jessica
Synder (’05)
will be home and we are taking off to Seattle to visit with her sister and
cruise to Alaska. Jessica will be a Cadre on the Eagle this summer.
She is very excited about showing the swabs the ropes. We will be going
to Annapolis in August to meet her ship for the weekend.
Ian Starr ('06) into New Orleans on June 16 to meet with his cutter Valiant out of Miami. He'll be out among the sharks patrolling the Gulf for illegal immigrants, drug smugglers and boats in distress - we feel this is probably safer than his two days of liberty in New Orleans along Bourbon Street! :-) We're hoping he gets a nice quaint fishing village on the east coast come 2006! Ian will be joining 2nd phase Eagle on June 16. Before leaving the Academy after finals, Ian found out he had received a silver star for his military performance. We're thankful he had a good year and wish all our cadets a wonderful, safe summer.
