President's Message

December has already arrived and, as we begin the last month of the year 2001, we wonder at how quickly it has all gone by. Thanksgiving has come and gone, and our cadets have survived a semester at the USCGA. September 11th is already 3 months behind us, although still very fresh in our minds. Our association continues to grow and evolve. Thanks to the efforts of Lee Kent this past spring, we developed our Constitution and By-Laws and began the clarification of the roles of our committees. We have a nice influx of new members from the class of 2005. Our website is up and going.

Christmas is fast approaching, and we look forward to a nice long visit with our cadet, and the beginning of another semester. For our association, January will also bring the election of new officers and the re-doubling of efforts by our committees. We ask that you devote some time in service to this chapter. We still need some committee chairs, committee members, help with the All Academy Ball 2002, and as always, financial donations to our fundraising efforts. We encourage you to volunteer....you get back so much more than you give.

Have a wonderful holiday season. Cherish those chats with your cadet, and take lots of pictures! We look forward to seeing you all in January at our Annual Meeting and election. And please remember, if we can be of any help to you, please call!!

Semper parentis,

Gary and Annie

co-Vice Presidents

Thanks to.....

Judith Alberts......for once again finding us a place to meet and eat! We really ought to have someone else take over this job.......how about it? Anyone out there interested?

Spotlight On :

Fundraising

Our fundraising chairman, Tom Lynch, has written this special message:

This year's fundraiser has taken on a special importance and urgency because of recent developments concerning the liberty vans that our cadets depend on for transportation.

One of our members recently requested that their donation be applied toward the Liberty Vans. They informed me that many of the vans are out of service and in their case, cadets who were going home for RECRUITING LEAVE had to rent a limousine because the vans were not operating.

The Watch Office at Echo Company gave me the following status of the vans. There are a total of 6 vans of which three are operational. Their annual maintenance budget of $8500 is totally depleted and they estimate that they will need an additional $7000 right away in order to put all the vans into service.

The current maintenance fund is depleted because a new transmission had to be replaced in one van, and a cracked piston in another. In addition there is a need for new tires on some of the vans. Some of the older vans have in excess of 100,000 miles and require more maintenance. The long and short is that we have many older vans with worn tires that are underfunded and out of service. The van fund needs an immediate infusion of money so that ALL VANS can be put back into service.

We can all help by making a donation! So far in 2001, our donations have amounted to $2,360, which includes a $100 check that I received today from a member who had already donated $100 this year!

If you haven't made a donation yet, but have been thinking about it, now during the "Christmas Season" would be the perfect time. I will be listing all donors in a special report in the March newsletter. If you send in your donation in 2002, but would like it credited for 2001, please write a little note to that effect.

Make checks payable to: USCGA Parents Assoc. Great Lakes Chapter. Mail to: Tom Lynch, PO Box 238, Oregon, IL 61061. Please feel free to call me toll-free 1-800-352-8525 with any questions.

"We are making a difference!"

GLPA.ORG

For those who haven't checked it out, our new website is up and running! It has progressed well in the last few months and Alan Blount, our chapter webmaster, has now received most of the cadet photos. When you bring up the site, be sure to use ".org" as the ending of our internet web address, not ".com". The address ".com" was not available since it was already owned by another entity. Our correct address is www.glpa.org. We are being hosted by a company in California for the very reasonable cost of $6.50 per month. We have bought a year's worth of hosting in advance and have registered our domain name. Now that we own the name and have the hosting set up it is very easy to make changes and publish them to the site.

We still need submission from you for the site. Needed are any missing cadet photos, any "tidbits" (funny, interesting or thought provoking things that your cadets have encountered at the academy or Great Lakes Association related information) and selected correspondence (anything you feel might be of interest). Also needed are candid or academy related photos, cadet bio information to go along with the cadet photos (Alan has received info from many of you, but there are still some without bio information) and any links that you would like to see posted on the site. If any of your cadets have changed majors, let Alan know so that he can update the information in their bio.

For the '05 parents: I only have a few of your cadet's photos and bio infor-mation. If you can't get them scanned, send a photo with a self addressed stamped envelope and I'll scan them and return the photo.

Creative new ideas are also welcomed. After all, this is YOUR website!
